Lost Churches and a Battlefield
A new walk
exploring the Winceby area has been produced by the Heritage
Lincolnshire, with funding by East Lindsey District Council and WREN. The
5½ km (3½ miles) circular route on public footpaths and quiet lanes starts
at Snipe Dales Nature Reserve car park at Winceby and passes through the
hamlets of Hameringham and Asgarby, taking in the history and archaeology
of the area along the way.
There has
been human settlement in this area for thousands of years, with the marks
that generations of people have left on the landscape still visible today.
The area was also the scene of the English Civil War Battle of Winceby in
October 1643, with fine views from the route across Slash Hollow where it
reached its bloody conclusion. The story of the battle is outlined in the
walk leaflet and new interpretation boards along the route give more
detail.
The leaflet
also explains how prehistoric worked flints, Anglo-Saxon burials, deserted
medieval villages and farming methods have been discovered in this area
thanks to archaeology. It tells of the Victorian churches at Winceby and
Asgarby, demolished in the 20th century, whose churchyards
survive in isolation, and the medieval church at Hameringham which is
still in use today.
The leaflet
will be launched during the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival on
Tuesday 20th May at
2.00pm.
Starting from the nature reserve car park, the guided walk will last about
2 hours so why not join the Heritage Lincolnshire for a truly
historic experience? For a copy of the leaflet, please send a
