History beneath your feet

The history of the Lincolnshire Wolds goes back to the earliest times where hunter gatherers roamed the area making tools from the local flint.  Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Saxons and all who have followed called the Wolds home and left evidence behind to prove it.

Earthworks near North Elkington

The Wolds Historical Research Society is a local group dedicated to finding and recording this evidence in a number of ways through the use of field-walking, metal detectors, geo-physics (as seen on Time Team) and documentary research.  If you are interested in a tangible connection to history then our searches can make it possible - nothing beats finding an artefact that was last touched by someone hundreds or even thousands of years ago; it really brings history to life!

Our searches and recording, however, cannot be carried out without landowners granting their permission, which in many cases is readily given.  We are appealing to other landowners to grant us permission to search in one or more methods and as an incentive we will give money to them to donate to a charity of their choice if they wish.  We also offer a free lost metal object recovery service for jewellery, tools or anything metal.  If you are interested in the possibility of helping this project or need our recovery service we are happy to answer any questions you may have.  Your land’s history awaits discovery!

Found something interesting?

Have you discovered something in your garden, or perhaps out walking?  MaybeSilver pennies - Portable Antiquities Scheme you’ve got a tub of ‘finds’ in your garage made over the last few years turning the veg patch over.  If so, we’d like to encourage you to get in touch with the Portable Antiquities Scheme www.finds.org.uk.  This is a national scheme set up to identify and record archaeological artefacts discovered by the public, with each county having a ‘Finds Liaison Officer’, whose job it is to record your finds.  The Lincolnshire Finds Liaison Officer is Adam Daubney, who is based in Lincolnshire County Councils’ Conservation Services in Lincoln.  Over the last 5 years, Adam has recorded over 10,000 finds from within Lincolnshire, which shows just how archaeologically rich the county is.

What kind of archaeological finds would you like to record?

AdamPrehistoric hand axe - Portable Antiquities Scheme would like to know about everything that you have found – not just metal objects.  He records all objects made before about 1700 and is selective in recording more modern finds.  It is often best to let Adam see all your finds, especially if you are unsure what they are; a nondescript lump of metal may turn out to be of archaeological interest!

How can I record my finds?

Contact Adam for a chat, or send images of your finds via e-mail so he can make an initial assessment of the collection and arrange to go through your finds in more detail.
