The Lincolnshire Wolds is a nationally important and
cherished landscape, much of which was designated as an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1973 on account of its high
scenic beauty. The
Lincolnshire Wolds lie in the north-eastern quarter of the county of
Lincolnshire, mid-way between Lincoln and the coast, surrounded by
the relatively flat fens, coastal marsh and the Lincoln Clay Vale.
The AONB comprises an area of 558 kmē (216 milesē), while the wider
Lincolnshire Wolds Character/Natural Area incorporates the two
neighbouring areas of the 'Spilsby Crescent' to the south and the
remaining chalk uplands to the north. The
Lincolnshire Wolds have been inhabited since prehistoric times and
the appearance of the countryside today has been greatly influenced
by past and present agricultural practices. The Countryside Service helps to
protect and enhance the landscape through partnership projects with
local landowners, farmers, parish councils, businesses and residents
of the Wolds
