HLF Poetry Competition - 17th Feb - 14th July 2017

HLF Poetry Competition 2017

Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund with support from the Lincolnshire County Council we're pleased to announce our 2017 Poetry Competition!

The theme of the competition is 'Lincolnshire Chalk Streams'. Entries welcome from Friday 17th February, with a deadline of midnight on Friday 14th July 2017.

The poem must relate to our marvellously rare Lincolnshire chalk streams, here's some ideas:

  • The chalk streams themselves - Flowing, meandering, clean water
  • Creatures of the chalk streams - Otters, water voles, kingfishers, brown trout
  • Problems affecting our chalk streams - Pollution, invasive species such as signal crayfish
  • How chalk streams make you feel - Calm, excited
  • A particular chalk stream in Lincolnshire - Bain, Waring, Lymn, Waithe, Long Eau, Lud, Rase, why not go and visit one!

2017 is the 125th anniversary of Tennyson's death so here's some inspiration from his poem 'The Brook' :

...I wind about, and in and out,
With here a blossom sailing,
And here and there a lusty trout,
And here and there a grayling,

And here and there a foamy flake
Upon me, as I travel
With many a silvery waterbreak
Above the golden gravel,

And draw them all along, and flow
To join the brimming river
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever......
