SITE DESCRIPTION: The site is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is of national importance for its sequence of ice-age deposits. The exposed face is the remains of a gravel pit which closed in the late 1970's. Within the gravels were discovered man-made hand axes associated with antlers, tusks and bones of several large animals characteristic of inter-glacial periods. The area around the face is currently being restored. Meadow, wetland and hedgerow features are now protected under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.
GROUP LEVEL: Aged 14 and above
AVAILABILITY: March to August, best visited after May.
Groups must book at least 2 weeks before visiting.
ACCESS AND PARKING: Easy parking on site for coaches, minibuses and cars.
The circular walk is approximately 2 miles and is not suitable for wheelchair users.
FACILITIES: Occasionally staff are available to talk to groups on site. No toilets or indoor facilities on site.
