Community Lincs have issued their December Newsletter, click here to view

Defra has today launched the Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) with confirmed funding of £20m.  The RCBF is jointly funded by Defra and Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), and complements BDUK’s mainstream broadband rollout programme. The Fund enables the funding of superfast broadband projects in the most hard to reach areas in England, bringing superfast broadband to a greater number of communities than would otherwise be reached. This will ensure that a greater proportion of businesses and consumers in those communities can take advantage of the benefits of superfast broadband. The Fund is being delivered as part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).  More information about the fund and details on how to apply can be found on Defra’s RDPE Network webpage http://rdpenetwork.defra.gov.uk/funding-sources/rural-community-broadband-fund

Please note that discussion will be taking place in the next few days with the relevant contacts from East Midlands County Councils and Rural Community Councils. Any community considering applying to the fund will need to contact their County Broadband lead and RCC for advice and assistance, after they have studied the information and guidance, including Frequently Asked Questions, available on the web link above.

Listen out for a Radio 4 broadcast about a walk in the Wolds with Clare Balding at 6am on Saturday 15 October, and repeated on Thursday 20 October at 3pm. Alternatively, catch up on the BBC iPlayer.

Chris Dowse, of Sir Richard Sutton's Settled Estates, Market Rasen, was crowned Countryside Farmer of the Year at last week's Farmers Weekly Awards, one of the country's top professionals by an industry magazine.  Mr Dowse, who has been estate manager for 20 years, was praised for demonstrating how farming and the environment can complement each other on the Estate in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

He will semi-retire at the end of the month, after working on the farm's biodiversity and financial records during his employment.  The farm grows crops, such as wheat and barley, and has a herd of Lincoln Red cattle and flock of sheep.  The event, now in its seventh year, was hailed as the biggest celebration of farming.  It took place in London on Thursday 6th October

Lincolnshire increases its fundraising efforts for farming's national charity R.A.B.I. within first half of 2011 Following a call for action to help support farming families across Lincolnshire who have fallen upon hard times, the farming community have responded by nearly doubling their charitable gift giving between January and July of this year towards the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI). Each year the R.A.B.I. provides financial and practical assistance to farmers, farm workers and their family members who suffer a need, hardship or are in distress. The charity celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, including an article in Wolds News, and continues to provide specialist support including mobility equipment, adaptions around the home and relief workers grants whilst individuals recover from an illness, disability or following an accident.  In 2010, RABI spent £56,712.38 in Lincolnshire to support 60 farming families, providing an important service to ensure for the wellbeing and welfare of each beneficiary who needed assistance.  With these figures in mind, the county have responded by raising funds to help support their neighbours. In 2010, the county raised £12,000 whereas between January and July of 2011, £19,371 has been received so far.

Commenting on this great achievement is Lincolnshire RABI county chairman Hugh Wykes ‘ I would like to thank everyone who has got behind our call for action and helped to support local farming families who need our assistance’. ‘We still have a way to go to raise what we spend within Lincolnshire, however I’m thrilled that we are starting to make an impact and more and more people are aware of how important R.A.B.I services are to our industry’. Throughout the year various groups and organisations have got behind the campaign including NFU branches, Lincolnshire young farmers and local businesses such as Spaldings of Lincoln who raised over £6,000 from a company skydive, cake sales and hosting raffles at agricultural shows. RABI regional officer Milly Wastie commented that ‘if you would like to show your support towards the R.A.B.I or would like to find out more information you can get in touch with me on 07525 323450 or drop me an email at milly.wastie@rabi.org.uk . ‘Our website is www.rabi.org.uk and if you think you or someone you know may require our assistance please call the confidential helpline on: 01865 727888 ‘.

From Anabats, to guided walks, surveys and weatherwriters it is with great pleasure that the Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership announces the launch of the Local Recording Fund. The aim of the fund is to promote and encourage environmental recording in the historic county of Lincolnshire.  It is hoped that formalisation of the fund, which has previously operated on an ad hoc basis, will encourage wider take-up within the county and help to further our knowledge of the biodiversity and geodiversity on our doorsteps.  Applications can be accepted from individuals and groups at any time, and will be assessed quarterly at the LBP Steering Group meetings.  Successful applications are expected to be in the region of £200 – £500. Other requests will be judged on the project benefits.  For further details please see the website: www.lincsbiodiversity.org.uk/fund.

Welton le Wold book now available

History Book of Welton le Wold is now published. Welton le Wold, near Louth, is today a quiet farming hamlet nestling in the Lincolnshire Wolds. But it has a rich history going back to the time of Domesday and beyond. Past and present residents of Welton le Wold have joined together and, with financial assistance from the lottery, published a book about the village. The book gives an account of the features of this charming Wolds village, but above all remembers some of the prominent characters, families and events that have brought life to the community over the past century or so. With 120 pages and over 300 photographs and images, this book makes an engaging read. Available from Debbie Lishman at £9.99 on 01507 450271 and weltonbook@aim.com
