Mayfly in the Classroom

The LCSP have been working with the Wild Trout Trust (WTT) to investigate the opportunity to use the 'Mayfly in the Classroom' initiative to help raise awareness of chalk streams in Lincolnshire with local schools.

The 'Mayfly in the Classroom' initiative is an educational project created by the Wild Trout Trust to enable students to learn about aquatic and terrestrial habitats through the study of aquatic invertebrates. The project involves practically studying mayflies in the classroom to learn about their life cycles and how they fit into the wider ecosystem. The aim of the project is to ' to connect school children to their local river habitats..' and has been designed to tie into the national curriculum.

Educational resources and facilities

A scoping report has been carried out which investigated the need for an educational resource pack based on the chalk streams, and to locate sites where schools could access to streams.

Since this report several sites have been developed to accommodate educational activities. Here is a list of existing and recently developed sites:

Classroom in the Woods, Moorhouse Farm, Ashby-Cum-Fenby. – New education centre near Barnoldby le beck (adjacent to the Waithe beck).

Dog Kennel Farm (by Hubbards Hills) – Recently developed to provide school friendly access to Hallington beck (a tributary of the River Lud).
