The Civil War in Lincolnshire.
Saturday, October 12th
October 11th, 1643 saw one of the influential battles of the Civil War enacted here in the Wolds at Winceby.
We take a day to review and to consider the causes and the ensuing chaos which resulted.
This battle which left such an ugly and bloody blotch on our usually peaceful landscape.
A day of two halves:-
Morning
Tour of the battlefield site
10am Winceby: Don Smith of the Battlefield Trust leads a guided tour of the battle site. The walk will last approximately 2 hours. Hot drinks available on return at Ramsden Village Hall, Old Bolingbroke ( see below)
Morning : £5 to include refreshments. Payment on the day.

Afternoon
Talks & Visit
12.30pm Muster at Ramsden Village Hall, Old Bolingbroke ( PE23 4EX). Parking on site.
Bring your own combat rations. Hot drinks and rebellious cake available.
1.30pm Winceby: lost church, lost congregation. A look at recent research relating to the now demolished church of St Margaret’s and introducing former members of the congregation through their inventories. Dave Start entertains.
2pm The Civil War in Lincolnshire. A talk by Dr Jonathon Fitzgibbons, University of Lincoln looking at the impact of the war in Lincolnshire, putting the Winceby battle into its historical perspective.
3.30pm SS Peter & Paul. At the kind invitation of the Friends of Old Bolingbroke Church, a visit and guided tour of Old Bolingbroke church with local historian Bruce Trewin. A fascinating building both historically & architecturally.
If time allows, a chance to peek over at the castle…..
5pm. Ramsden Hall - the kettle will be on for those who would like, or benefit from, a last slice of rebellious cake and a cuppa.
